Those white moons are called lunalae. The lunala is the only visible portion of the nail matrix which produces the nail itself. The matrix (and the lunalae) never moves, but new nails continually push forward, away from the matrix.
Why does lunala appear white?
Dermatologist Harry Arnold explains, that the nail bed of the lunala look pink because capillaries with blood in them immediately underlie the nail plate. The lunalae look white because the thin, modified epidermis of the nail bed is 3/4 ti,es thicker there, being the busy factory of manufacturing nail plates. and moreover the lunala is a vascular (no blood vessel), so it looks white.
