While food poisoning can be substantially reduced by practising good hand hygiene, preparing food properly using clean water and materials and storing food at safe temperatures in clean places, it can still happen due to unforeseen circumstances.
Symptoms of food poisoning can begin between half an hour and upto a few days after a meal. Common symptoms include:
- feeling sick
- vomiting
- nausea
- diarrhoea
- stomach cramps
Most people can recover from food poisoning without treatment, but its symptoms can be relieved by:
- drinking plenty of fluids
- avoiding solid foods and eating easily digested foods
- resting well
However, if any of the below happens, see a healthcare provider to get treatment.
- Vomiting that lasts for more than 2 days
- Diarrhoea that ges worse or does not get better after 5 days
- There is blood or pus in your stools
- There is symptoms of dehydration - thirst, dizziness and light-headedness
- Your heart is racing, pounding or skipping.
